“And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Phil 2:11

that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
Philippians Chapter 2
Do we have to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord? Do we have to believe that Jesus is our Lord/God and the one who saved us?
I am not going to talk about the term Trinity latin trinus 'threefold” but I do believe in the words of the apostle John because they are written in my Bible.
1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The answer is yes. It is important to believe that God was on the cross. Jesus means God save.
2 Corinthians 5:19 “To wit, that God was in Christ,….. 2 Corinthians 5:21 ….who knew no sin
God was in Christ/ who knew no sin 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Many people today use the name JESUS but only if you have God's spirit you can say JESUS IS THE LORD
1 Corinthians 12:3 “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”
Lets start with the word: Confess = acknowledge: When we read the word Confess we think often that it is about saying in public “I AM A SINNER” others say that Confess has to do with Israel Matt.3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
James.5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Confess = acknowledge is not only about sin. When Christ was on earth acknowledging who he was conditional: Matt.10:32 Whosoever, therefore, shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
I started writing about “that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” after some conversation that I had with someone that I know for many years and in the past who joined our fellowship.
Nowadays he and his family follow “adolf knoch” universalism teaching. People do not like when you mention a name of a teacher. They say often “I am not following anyone, while they do follow certain teaching.
When people use to ask me long before we had the internet .” Where is your teaching coming from”. I always mention C.R. Stam books it was in the light of Paul's words:
2 Timothy 1:8 “Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;” .
It is important to mention our teachers.
In my first article about this subject. I wrote about “reconciliation” . I wrote that reconciliation is not salvation. When people from our church decided to change teaching and to follow “A.Knoch teaching” it was too late. They already made their choice.
Did I read all “Adolf Knoch” writing? No! Did I read all “Ë.W. bullinger” writings? no!. It was back in 1982 that for the first time I heard about “adolf Knoch” teaching. C.R Stam book man his nature and destiny helped me to understand the subject. https://www.bijbel.nl/books
I saw over the years many people who heard about the dispensation of grace and for some reason choose to follow “A.Knoch” teaching while knowing that his followers do not teach that Jesus Christ is God.
Here in the Netherlands like everywhere, some people heard about the dispensation of grace and for different reasons choose to follow “Adolf Knoch teaching” and not the sound doctrine as Paul is teaching in his letters.
I am using the king version Bible, I believe that Jesus is our God and savior. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” ( see the study Jesus is God)
I believe as it is written: Revelation 20:10 “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
to confess is not just about sin
John.9:22 ……that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
John.12:42 ….. they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
Acts;23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
Acts.24:14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
When we come to Paul's letters we learn that CONFESS has to do with the name of Christ
Rom.10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
To be saved, you need to acknowledge that JESUS is the LORD. It is not about standing in front of the public with an open mouth. It is about believing that God was on the cross when he died for our sins.
Romans14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
So why did Paul start talkingto the Philippians that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Does he going to teach them about salvation or that this confession means “salvation for all”? Let's see together what is all about!
Let this mind be in you
we can build on each bible verse and different doctrines. I believe that when Christ through Paul says to us “that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord….” It has to do with the chapter. The issue is unity and for unity, you need to know who is Christ.
The doctrine of salvation or better to say “Justification by faith” is in Romans chapter 3,4. Etc. and the words in Philippians 2:10-11 are not going to change it.
Philippians 2:5“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
In Philippians 2:1-4 The apostle Paul is talking about that the believers will be likeminded, the same love, one accord, of one mind.”
What was the problem with them that they needed to be open minded: As I see it one of the problems would be: 2Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Phil 3;2
We can assume that also in Paul's days not everyone understood well or agree about the teaching that CHRIST IS GOD.
It is hard to see it today as “the one mind” because he is talking about the teaching. Not many among those say “Jesus is my Lord” or “He died on the cross for my sins”” etc. Heard about the dispensation of grace in Ephesians 3:1-9.
This is why Christ through Paul is saying to us : Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Christ is our sample. Paul say: 1 Corinthians 2:16 “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” Ephesians 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Mind =the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought.
This means that the way we think, feel, etc in this dispensation of grace should be in accordance to the gospel of God’s grace that Christ gave to Paul.
As a sample take the so-called “Charismatics movement” and many others who building their mind, and feelings on the so-called earthly ministry of Christ, Miracles, visions, dreams, etc.
which was also in Christ Jesus:
Why Paul is writing WHICH WAS and not IS ? For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1 Tim 2:5-6.
Paul is writing about the one and the same Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:8 “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:”
The Bible teac us that. God became flesh, “that God was in Christ” 2 Cor 5:19.
History is full of discussions about “if Christ was God or not”.
So while we are talking about the mind “which was also in Christ Jesus:”. We are doing it according to what Christ told the apostle Paul.
Jesus Christ, God in the flesh is the same. The mind of Christ now in 2022 is according to the dispensation of Grace. We can read all of the Bible and I do it and enjoy it but if we want to understand the mind of Christ for us, we should better start reading Paul letters. All of them.
6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
While Paul wants us to have the mind of Christ. He is writing about who Christ was and is
I am asking often people if they believe that “Jesus is God” . It is not a question that many like to hear.
Our salvation/justification is based only on faith. Believing what?
….that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” 1 Cor. 15:1-5, Romans 10:8-13
Confess – acknowledge -say
Do we need to believe that Jesus is God? Is believing that Jesus is God part of the gospel of God’s grace, the gospel that we should believe in order to receive the gift of eternal life ?
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
I believe that when Paul wrote to the believers about “the gospel which I preached unto you,….” 1 Cor 15:1. It was the same gospel that he wrote to the Romans. The gospel of salvation is included belief that “Jesus is the Lord”. It is first believing and then learning more about it.
Remember that Paul was teaching in every-every church the same.
1 Corinthians 4:17“For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.”
There is today a large group of people who say “Jesus is the son of God” . They have difficulties saying “Jesus is the Lord” or “Jesus is the lord and savior”
I believe and therefore teach: (those just a few verses about that Christ is our God)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” Titus 1:3 “But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;”
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
Understanding the mind of Christ under grace goes together with the belief that it was God who died on the cross for our sins:
I spoke with a brother who came from the Charismatics movement and spoke mostly on Christ as the “son of God”. “When I heard that CHRIST IS GOD” suddenly I realized that God was on the cross when he died for my sins and rose again.
2 Corinthians 5:19 “To wit, that God was in Christ,
Philippians 2: 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
the name which is above every name:
9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Who is Christ?. When we speak about unity we need to look to Christ but who is Christ for you. “wize man” or God himself.
That Christ was God was an issue also in Pauls's days.
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ
Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Philipians 3:1-12
It is not easy for a “circumcise” person at that time to believe that “Christ was God in the flesh. It is based on: Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:”
We see today that many people who just believe that JESUS IS THE MASSIA have a problem saying that HE IS OUR GOD.
5Circumcised the eighth day - the righteousness which is of God by faith
4Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;6Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.7But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,9And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:10That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;11If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.12Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
If you read this part again and again you will understand why is it so important that we should understand that God was in Christ. It is important for our understanding of the doctrine righteousness which is of God by faith. You can not believe that righteousness is only by faith if you do not know WHO WAS CHRIST.
9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Philippians 2:10-11 Jesus is not just a name it means GOD SAVE . His name is above: Hebrews 1:4 “Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”
confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord is the key to salvation and the unity of the believers. We can see the same in Colossians Chapter 1:12-18. The apostle Paul starts with what Christ has done for us and goes further to who is Christ.
What Christ has done for us?
Colossians Chapter 1
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Who is Christ?
15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
When you read Colossians Chapter 1:12-17 you can see that What Christ has done for us on the Cross goes together with WHO CHRIST IS. You can not believe that salvation is by grace alone through faith if you do not believe that Christ is our God
Now we can go back to our study and read again:
9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10-11
God gave Christ a better name, name above all names – GODS SAVE. What does it means that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Is he talking about salvation to all? I do not think so and this is NOT my teaching.
[18] For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:[19] By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; [20] Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. [21] The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: [22] Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. 1 Peter 3:18-22
But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
As we read those verses 1 Peter 3:18-22 we understand that after Christ's death on the cross he went and preached to the spirit in prison.
The purpose of this short study is just to help you understand that it is important to confess/acknowledge that JESUS IS OUR LORD
