Stand fast therefore in the liberty
The letter to the Hebrews is written to the Hebrews?
People like to make all kinds of statements and sometimes the statement is more important than God's word. Statements can be nice and sometimes true but it is always important to understand the subject directly from God's Word.
The letter is written to the Hebrews while the word Hebrew is not mentioned in the letter. What do we know about the Hebrews? Genesis 14:13 Abram was Hebrew long before we read about any Jew in the Bible. Hebrew people are mostly considered the Semitic-speaking Israelites, the nation of Israel. By the time of the Roman Empire, Greek Hebraios could refer to the Jews in general. Acts 6:1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Acts 22:2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith
So while we read “the letter to the Hebrews = The nation Israel who spoke also Hebrews. The letter itself teaches us :
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Heb 1:1. It is easy to make men make the statement or to say at loud “you are not a Hebrew” It is something different to explain why.
In the same line, we have more letters: James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. James 1:1
1 Peter 1:1 1 Peter 1:1 “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,” Peter writes to “the strangers scattered…..”
And John said: 2 John 1:1 “The elder unto the elect lady ….” 3 John 1:1 “The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.”
Jude 1:1 “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ,
And John closes again with: Revelation 1:4 “John to the seven churches which are in Asia:
This study is not to argue but to help people to understand the harmony between 2 Timothy 3:16
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God,….. and Ephesians Chapter 3 1For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
I say it because we are living in the dispensation of grace whether you believe it or Not. Like I said before to follow a man-made statement it is easy but to explain the issue in love because you want to help someone to understand God's Word is different.
So let’s start:
The letter called to the Hebrews. The letter is part of the Bible the Word of God and the Word of God is given to all people on this earth so they may know who is the God of Israel the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. People like to say “It is written to Israel” Well the nation rejected Christ and they never read it. I never read the so-called new testament before I was saved. It is better to say “ The Letter or the book is about the nation Israel or the about the earthly kingdom etc. The main issue in the so-called 4 gospels is the earthly kingdom. It is there in 2022 for all people. You just need to understand the difference between G“If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of Godods earthly kingdom and the dispensation of Grace.
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
So why do people say that “Hebrews is for the Hebrews….” The answer is because during the last +- 2000 after the apostle Paul receives the dispensation of grace. More people started to understand that Paul is the apostle of the “Church the body of Christ”. In Paul's Letters, we find our teaching. I say it simple but today many among those who understand the dispensation of Grace do not follow Paul in all the teaching that Christ gave to the church.
The letters to the Hebrews till the book revelation are about the period after the end of the dispensation of grace. This is what I understand and therefore teach.
Just because the letters are written to the Hebrews it does not say that we should not read them or study them! Why?
Just because it is not written about the “church the body of Christ” it does not say that we don't need to read it! why?
You see I am asking why because just making man-made statements does not go to help anyone. We need to try to understand it directly from God's word.
Romans 16:25 “Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,”
Before I am going to explain more. I want to mention Romans 16:25. I teach the last 40 years about the dispensation of grace. I can say that mostly I am going through Paul's letters. I can teach from Psalm if I want or do a nice study about proverbs but I believe that we need first be established so there is no time left to other Bible books accept reading them.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God
, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Tim 3:16
This verse is an important key to understanding why we should read all of the Bible. There is another important truth here “That the man of God”. The scripture is not talking about any member of the body of Christ but about the “man of God” if you going to teach others you will have to go outside “Paul letters” to learn different doctrines. Creation, Israel, Christ is God, atonement, etc.
So again it is important on one side to understand the position of Paul's letters in the Light of the dispensation of Grace and to be established in the faith. On the other hand, God's Word teaches very clearly that the man of God needs all scriptures.
Sample: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Heb1:4 is a part of the great doctrine that Christ is God. His name in Hebrews is GODS SAVES.
2 Timothy 2:15“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
ALL SCRIPTURES vs RIGHTLY DIVIDING.
What is rightly dividing? What are we going to divide? Not everyone agrees about it. For me, it was always about the dispensation of grace. Understanding between God's purpose with Israel and the nations and God's purpose for the body of Christ.
Anyhow 2 Tim 2:15 is first about a study of the word of truth. It does not say only Paul's letters or part of them. It says rightly dividing. How can you divide if you know only one part of the story? Dividing between what? Prophecy or mystery? Paul's letters and the rest?. It is simple. Read all of the Bible and be built through understanding that Christ gave Paul the dispensation of Grace.
For this, cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,2If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 3How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,4Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Ephesians Chapter 3
The keyword here is - 4Whereby, when ye read – If you read the book acts starting from chapter 9 you will learn about the changing in God way dealing with People. In Paul's letters starting with the book of Romans, you will learn all kinds of doctrines concerning the “body of Christ”
written for our learning - are written for our admonition,
Romans 15:4 “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
1 Corinthians 10:11 “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world come.”
When Paul is using scriptures from the old testament it is not because he had a special Jewish ministry as some say. Just read what is written! written for our learning - written for our admonition
I know that some do not agree with it not because is not written but because it is not according to their manmade teaching.
Many today like to make all kinds of statements to get attention from people. The letter to the Hebrews is written to the Hebrews ? is one of them suggesting that you do not have to read it or whatever.
I hope that this short study will help you to build your faith and teachings on God's word and not on man-made statements.
Remember the following again: All scripture is given by inspiration of God….“Now to him that is of power to establish you - “If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God
Be strong in God's word and His grace – Dov Avnon
